Tate Britain

Opened in 1987, featuring famous artists.

This impressive gallery hosts a collection of work by key artists such as Turner, Gainsborough, Blake, Constable, Bacon, Hepworth, Hodgkin and Wearing and includes rooms with historical themes. It is the oldest gallery in the network, having opened in 1897 and being based in Pimlico, just on the riverside makes it easily reachable by tube, bus and even on foot.

In 1889 the industrialist Henry Tate who had made his fortune as a sugar refiner, decided he would offer to the British nation his collection of art, however to his astonishment, the National Gallery no longer had space. This adversity led him on a search of a new gallery that would house not only his art but also the works of British artists from various other collections.
